What Types of Barcode Scanners Work with Scanability?

Having the right tools in place saves a business time, money and effort. Customers who use Scanability already know that the application is tightly integrated with JD Edwards, uniquely leveraging the customer’s existing investment in JD Edwards to avoid necessitating endless customizations and different hardware necessary to run the application. What you might not know is that Scanability carries that same ethos of efficiency and expedience over to the hardware side of things, too.

In this article, you’ll learn about the different types of scanning devices supported by Scanability.

What is Scanability?

First, a refresher on what Scanability is. It’s a proprietary scanning application created by ERP Suites to assist businesses with all manner of scanning needs. Scanability extends the functionality of an ERP system to a much smaller device, with a much simpler user interface that is easier to understand and use in real-world applications, like on a warehouse receiving dock. Scanability works to eliminate mistakes resulting from manual data entry and increase efficiency while ensuring your product’s A-Z journey retains its integrity.

What hardware and software is compatible with Scanability?

Companies of all sizes and types utilize Scanability for their scanning needs. Specialized scanning tools that are Scanability-compatible are available to run the application. There is a plethora of these devices, though mergers and acquisitions in this space is becoming increasingly common.

Operating system

Scanability supports almost any device that uses an Android operating system. In fact, Scanability can support devices that go all the way back to the Android 5.0 “Lollipop” operating system – though it is extremely rare to find anyone still using this OS. Still, if you are, we can support you.

We also have a Windows client for Scanability that will run on a laptop or desktop. We know that occasionally, customers encounter scenarios where someone who is typically behind a computer might need to access the same application that folks on the floor have.

Scanners

The manufacturer marketplace for scanners is vast, and a lot of different parameters go into scanners and scan guns. There is a wide selection of models with different sizes, weights, drop ratings and more specifications, for all the picking, packing, shipping, and inventory control barcode scanning needs a company might have.

General scanners are of the variety you see in the retail setting. These are less durable, and not optimal for potentially high-impact workplaces. Ruggedized scanners, however, are far more resilient, and consequently are very popular in the warehouse setting. Scanability is compatible with both.

What types of codes can Scanability read?

There are many types of barcodes that exist today that store information for businesses to rapidly access via scanning. While the ability to decode a specific barcode format is dependent upon the scanning hardware’s capabilities, Scanability can be used with all types, and businesses might choose a specific barcode format for a variety of reasons.

Barcodes

1D barcodes use long bars of varying thickness to visually represent data, such as item and inventory location. These are one-dimensional and linear in appearance. However, there are several different formats of 1D barcodes – three by nine, UPC, 2 of 5 – no matter the type, Scanability can leverage it provided the scanner has the proper capability to decode it.

Matrix codes

Matrix codes are two-dimensional and can represent more data per unit area than barcodes. Just like their one-dimensional counterpart, matrix codes come in a variety of types, proprietary and public domain, including Maxicode, PDF 417 and QR codes. The latter is perhaps the most well-known and widely used by laypeople, as it requires nothing more than a smartphone camera to read the data contained therein.
