Three approaches to AWS database migration

Databases are often the first move an ERP Suites customer makes to the cloud. Considering data is core to all applications, this isn’t too surprising. Cloud migration gives organizations more options for scaling, financing, and managing their databases—control essential to remain agile and competitive. Here are three database migration tools in AWS that can set you up for a successful transition:

Lift and shift your database with Amazon RDS

According to a recent Gartner report, 75% of all databases will be deployed or migrated to a cloud platform by 2022. However, this first step can be the most challenging. We limit the risk of data loss, downtime, inflated budgets, and extended schedules with Amazon RDS. A fully managed service, Amazon RDS promotes scalability and automatically backs up to Amazon S3.

Amazon RDS complements a “lift & shift” migration strategy when you want to keep your existing database engine. It supports MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle Database, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and Amazon’s own Aurora. Migration is simplified when you use Amazon Database Migration Service (DMS) to automate the process. And since you don’t need to provision hardware, it saves time and money too.

For customers who need to run a database unsupported by RDS, we recommend Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). You must provision and take care of the database management, but you gain ultimate control in the tradeoff.

Migrate with a database engine built for the cloud

If you aren’t committed to a database engine, think Amazon Aurora. It provides the performance and availability of traditional enterprise databases with the full benefit of AWS Cloud. Again, we use Amazon DMS to migrate our customers’ commercial databases to Aurora with minimal friction or downtime.

Aurora runs on Amazon RDS, so high performance, durability, and availability are a given. It can scale up to 64TB per database instance. Plus, data is replicated across three Availability Zones and backed up to Amazon S3 continuously.

Improve database access at any scale

We turn to Amazon DynamoDB for a fully managed serverless NoSQL (non-relational) database system. This key-value and document database guarantees millisecond performance at any scale without the worry of hardware provisioning, setup, or scaling. Truly, DynamoDB is built for speed and ease. Service any level of request traffic—it can handle up to 10 trillion requests per day! Our customers don’t sweat the process because DynamoDB supports encryption at rest to keep their sensitive data safe.

AWS database migration should leave you eager for the next cloud adventure. Plan your move around the best AWS service and ready your applications for a more powerful tomorrow.
